How we solve Webmin access denied error

Are you getting an error like access denied for X.X.X.X when you access Webmin control panel?

In Webmin, this error happens due to bad Webmin configuration settings and too many authentication failures.

Today, we’ll see how our Support Engineers easily troubleshoot access denied errors in Webmin and solved related issues.

Reasons and solutions for Webmin access denied error?

Webmin is a web-based application used to manage Linux servers. However, it may not work as we expected and results in access denied error.

In addition, there are many reasons to occur access denied error in Webmin. This includes:

  1. Bad Webmin configuration settings.
  2. Webmin user blocked due to firewall setup.

Let’s see why the error occurs and how it can be corrected.

1. Bad Webmin configuration settings

Webmin has a feature that only allows IP addresses specified in the Webmin configuration file. If the IP address is not added to the allowed list, then it can prevent you from logging into http:/yourserver:10000/ from another network or over the internet.

Consequently, when a user attempt to log into http:/yourserver:10000/, errors such as Error-Access denied for X.X.X.X may occur.

To solve this issue our Support Engineers took the following steps.

1. We checked the log file /var/log/webmin/miniserv.log and verified that the error has occurred.

2. And identified that the problem was due to the absence of IP address in /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf.

3. Then, we added the IP address in /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf file.

allow=xx.xx.xx.xx

4. At last, we restarted Webmin.

/etc/init.d/webmin

2. Webmin user blocked

If you enter more than 5 times the user ID and password in Webmin wrongly, your IP address will be blocked. Consequently, you may face error like

Error - Access denied for X.X.X.X. The user has been blocked because of too many authentication failures.

Then our Support Engineers took the following steps to solve the error.

1. Firstly, we checked what IP’s have been blocked by using the command.

tail  /var/webmin/miniserv.error

2. By restarting Webmin, we removed all IP blocks on the server.

 /etc/init.d/webmin restart

3. Thereafter, we reset the password.

 passwd

Once we have changed the password,  it allows to log in to the Webmin without any error.
